Using GPCalc safely
Please read these terms before using the calculators, references and patient leaflets on this site. By using GPCalc you agree to them.
In short: GPCalc is a prototype reference aid for UK primary care clinicians. It supports, but does not replace, your clinical judgement, current national guidance and your local policies. You remain responsible for every clinical decision.
1. About GPCalc
GPCalc is an independent, free prototype (October 2026) created by Sameer Alam, a GP trainee. It summarises published UK guidance – including NICE guidelines, NICE Clinical Knowledge Summaries, specialist society guidance and local formularies – into calculators and quick references.
GPCalc is not produced, endorsed or checked by NICE, the NHS, any royal college, specialist society or integrated care board. Names of organisations and guidelines are used only to show where content comes from.
2. Who it is for
- GPCalc is intended for qualified healthcare professionals working in UK primary care, who have the training to interpret its output.
- It is not intended for members of the public to diagnose or treat themselves. Patient leaflets are provided for clinicians to share, once they have checked them, as part of a consultation.
3. Clinical responsibility
- Outputs are suggestions to support decision-making. They are not a diagnosis, a prescription or a substitute for assessing the patient.
- Always consider the whole clinical picture: history, examination, comorbidities, medicines, frailty, pregnancy, and the person's preferences and values.
- Check recommendations against the current source guidance, the BNF and summary of product characteristics (SPC), MHRA safety updates, your local formulary and referral pathways, and your laboratory's reference ranges and critical limits. Where these differ from GPCalc, follow them.
- Seek senior or specialist advice when you are unsure, when the situation is complex, or when results or presentations don't fit.
- The tools cover common scenarios. They can't account for every exception, and they may not identify every red flag or interaction.
4. Accuracy and currency
- Content reflects the guidance available when it was written. Guidance, licences, doses, formularies and thresholds change, and GPCalc may not be updated straight away.
- Reasonable care is taken, but GPCalc is a prototype and may contain errors or omissions. It is provided "as is", without any guarantee that it is complete, accurate, up to date or suitable for a particular purpose.
- Default reference ranges and thresholds are typical UK values. Local laboratories and pathways may use different ones.
5. Not a medical device
GPCalc has not been assessed, registered or marked as a medical device. It is a reference aid only and must not be used as the sole basis for any clinical decision.
6. Patient information and privacy
- Calculations run entirely in your web browser. Values you enter or paste are not sent to, or stored on, any server.
- Your browser may remember your light/dark theme choice and whether you have dismissed the feedback prompt. No other personal information is stored, and the site does not use advertising or tracking cookies.
- Avoid entering information that identifies a patient. Where a tool accepts pasted results, it hides common identifiers from what it shows back, but you should still remove names, NHS numbers and dates of birth where possible.
- You are responsible for meeting your organisation's information governance requirements, including when you copy text into the patient record.
- The optional feedback form is hosted by Google Forms. Please don't include patient details in feedback.
7. Liability
To the extent permitted by law, the author accepts no liability for any loss, harm or damage arising from the use of, or reliance on, GPCalc or its content. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited under the law of England and Wales.
8. Links and third-party content
GPCalc links to external websites such as NICE, the BNF and specialist societies. These are outside its control, and their content and terms are the responsibility of their owners. Guidance is summarised in GPCalc's own words – always refer to the original documents.
9. Feedback and corrections
If you spot an error or have a suggestion, please use the "Give feedback" link or email a correction. Clinical safety reports are prioritised.
10. Changes to these terms
These terms may be updated as GPCalc develops. Continued use means you accept the current version. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
